Maureen Mulhern

Maureen Mulhern, MS, CGC, is a licensed genetic counselor with over 10 years of experience in neurogenetics in the research, clinical, and laboratory spaces. She received her Master of Science in genetic counseling from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in 2015. In her current role, she is part of the Interdepartmental Genetic Counseling Program at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC), where she works as a clinical genetic counselor in neurology and as a laboratory genetic counselor, aiming to bridge clinical care and laboratory genetic testing practices. 

Ms. Mulhern’s clinical and research work has been focused on promoting access to genetic counseling and testing in neurology, especially epilepsy. Ms. Mulhern was a member of the Epilepsy Genetics Systematic Evidence Review committee for the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC). She is a curator with the ClinGen Epilepsy Sodium Channel Variant Curation Expert Panel (VCEP). She has been lead and co-author on publications related to epilepsy genetic testing practice and publications describing novel epilepsy-related genes. 

Ms. Mulhern is passionate about education. She is an Assistant Professor of Genetic Counseling at CUIMC, where she teaches neurogenetics to genetic counseling students, and serves as a research mentor and clinical supervisor.
